Book Review: Badfish by Sue Rovens
Badfish was a book that I read simply because the synopsis was so outrageous that I had to see if she could actually pull off making someone who indulged in, uhm, public indecency the hero of the story. Did she manage it? Well… Lets just put it this way, my follow up email to this author said simply “You have an interesting mind.”
_____
What’s it about?
Misogynist motel owner Karl Demetris
has an insatiable desire for money and power. In order to line his
pockets, he leads an underground drug ring, but soon discovers a cheaper
substance to peddle. The effects on its victims are ghastly and
horrifying.
Strip club owner and public
masturbator extraordinaire, Donald Bickley, is the only person in a
position to stop this atrocity. Though he has his own demons to battle,
the future of Badfish rests in his sticky hands. Donald will need to
pull himself together long enough to save the town.

What did I think of it?
Badfish caught my eye
because of the synopsis. I, quite literally, told one of my friends “If
this author says she can make a public masturbator into the hero of a
story, I gotta read this.”
I read it in basically one sitting. Once
I got into it, I didn’t really know what in the world I was reading,
but I know I needed to find out how it ended, and at just over 200
pages, it was an easy book to read straight through.
Yes, there’s public masturbation, drug
deals and other unsavory doings. There’s also a unique horror twist,
characters that are so well-described they leap off the page, and a
derelict hotel where nobody cares if someone dies, as long as they die
quietly.
Overall, Badfish was an
extremely entertaining read, simply because some of the things that
happened, and some of the characters, were so outrageous you just have
to keep reading to find out what happens next. I would definitely
recommend it to anyone who is a fan of offbeat horror and the like.
